New app silences parties

New+app+silences+parties

by Sarah Doiron

Due to rising tensions between the Hamden community and Quinnipiac students living off-campus, three seniors created a web app called Kricket. This free service allows its members to anonymously text a noise complaint to avoid the involvement of the police.

Tom Nassr, Connor Croteau and Stanley Martone created Kricket after the realization of the various noise complaints from Hamden residents about Quinnipiac students living off-campus.

“We came up with Kricket because at night-time you would like to hear crickets instead of a loud party, and Kricket with a K wasn’t taken so we decided to buy the domain and go with Kricket,” Nassr said.

As of right now Kricket is only available for off-campus housing, but according to Nassr the creation of Kricket is underway.

“As far as on campus we are working hard to get that done,” Nassr said. “There is a huge problem on campus with noise complaints, especially during finals week when people want to study, and even just a ‘shut the door’ would be a really nice thing to be able to do. So campus Kricket is underway but it is not ready yet.”

Even though Kricket is not available yet for on-campus housing, students still see this app as useful for the Hamden community.

“I think it’s a really great idea,” graduate student Mary Greeley said. “I know there has been a lot of tension between the Hamden community and the Quinnipiac students living off-campus. So hopefully this will be a great way for the Hamden residents to talk to the students off-campus.”

Kricket is available online and even though it’s creators are still trying to work out bugs, there is only room for improvement.
