“Trainwreck” puts a twist on the traditional romantic comedy: Movie review

The age of Amy is upon us and boy is it a knock out!

Trainwreck is the latest romantic comedy from the mind of Amy Schumer and director Judd Apatow, and boy has the world been waiting for this one. This is one of the few romantic comedies I have seen that realistically shows what it is like to be in a relationship.

Welcome to the realistic coupling of Amy (Amy Schumer) and Aaron (Bill Hader) as they are awkward, fall in love, fight, break up, and deal with issues like normal everyday couples. Maybe it is just me, but I am beyond sick of the romantic comedy that teaches women that they need a man to be happy, and that relationships are the end all be all of life.

The other thing that Trainwreck provides us with is laugh out loud comedy for both men and women. With the Amy’s raunchy quick wit, and a surprisingly hilarious Lebron James, no one who watches this movie will be disappointed. With that being said, this is not the one to go to with your great-aunt Eunice, but I’m guessing you already knew that.

More surprisingly is the amount of drama that the movie has. There is obviously inherent drama in most comedies otherwise everything would be like the Three Stooges. However, I would even dare to say this one borders more on dramedy than straight comedy. If you are looking for a fun movie to kick back and laugh on a Wednesday afternoon I will say this one wouldn’t be the pick, but that isn’t to say that the movie isn’t hysterical.

Trainwreck is the feminist take on a romantic comedy and proves that relationships are a two way street and both people have to work to keep one alive. Goodbye to the grand romantic male gestures, not saying there isn’t one in here, but boy is it a knock out for feminism.

The other thing I noticed in the movie is that it is filled with Amy Schumer’s comedian friends. If you are an avid stand up comedy enthusiast (guilty) or are familiar with Amy’s show Inside Amy Schumer you will most likely see a few familiar faces, which is always exciting in movies. Amy is like the next Adam Sandler with bringing together a team of comedian friends in movies.

All in all I enjoyed the hell out of Trainwreck. I fully recommend it to anyone looking for a fun night out with friends, and yeah. Go see it.
