Quinnipiac students have their usual lineup of go-to places for the week. Friday is reserved for Aunt Chilada’s (Aunchies) and Uptown Upscale Lounge (Uptown), and Saturday is split between Bar and Toad’s Place. There are other bars, like Andale Mexican Restaurant (Dick’s) on Whitney and Side Street Bar & Grill (formerly known for their free wings on Tuesdays).

But what if you don’t feel like bumping into 10+ QU students, or you want to add some variety to your entertainment routine? The answer is The Playwright Irish Pub on 1232 Whitney Avenue.

According to its website, the Playwright has been around since 1999, and is “one of CT’s most authentic Irish Pub.” I, for one, believe it.

Even before you walk through the door, you’re introduced to some of its Irish charm. The physical door has a stained glass window with the pub’s name in a unique font. Inside, there is a choice between sitting at the bar or high top tables. The stools are upholstered with green felt, making it clear that it’s a classier place.

Looking around, you’ll notice something different about the place: architecture and decor. There’s a large fireplace – which, according to one of the Irish waitresses, is lit during the winter. Old books line the shelves and a medieval looking chandelier hangs above. Even the extensive woodwork of the walls and ceiling make you question whether you’re still in Hamden.

On the other side of the building is the restaurant section. Senior and long-time Hamden resident  Sam Vitale said her family has often gone to eat there.

“The Shephard’s pie is amazing,” Vitale said in a text.

The Playwright advertised its schedule on the large sheets given to students. Here are some of its weekly entertainment:

Wednesday: Trivia

Thursday/ Friday: D.J./ Live bands

Saturday: Live Irish Music

Sunday: Live Traditional Irish Music
