President Barack Obama was greeted by a room of screaming fans during his visit to Connecticut Wednesday. He addressed the crowd at Central Connecticut State University about his plan to raise the national minimum wage to $10.10.

“Nobody who works full time should ever have to raise a family in poverty,” Obama said. “It’s time to give Americans a raise.”

Hamden’s first African American mayor, Scott Jackson, was in the audience to see the country’s first African American president.

“There is a unique opportunity now in this business environment to do the right thing and enhance people’s wages at the same time,” Jackson said.

Obama urged the crowd to pressure Republicans in Congress to support his economic plans.
