As Quinnipiac University prepares to open its new South Quad, the current School of Business building is getting a new name and a new purpose: The Dome.
With the School of Business moving to the South Quad this summer, Quinnipiac faced a familiar question: what to call the now-empty building at the heart of the Mount Carmel campus. Rather than tie it to a specific program, the university chose a name that reflects a broader shift in its mission and identity.
In an interview, Provost Debra Liebowitz, the university’s chief academic officer, explained that The Dome is meant to bring multiple student resources together in one place.
“The idea of a dome is that everything comes together under one roof,” she said, “It’s symbolic of how we’re bringing different opportunities for students into one place. It reflects who we are and what we’re becoming.”
The building will house programs such as Q-Step, Career and Professional Development, Global Learning and the Honors Program. These services aim to enhance students’ experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
“These are all things that support students—both inside and outside the classroom,” Liebowitz said. “They’re about opportunity, career development, global learning, honors—things that connect to a lot of students in a lot of different ways.”
When it came to choosing a name, Liebowitz said the team explored several options, but ultimately returned to something simpler and more iconic.
“We kept coming back to The Dome,” she said, “It’s visible, it’s iconic, and people already refer to the building that way.”
Though simple, the name reflects Quinnipiac’s shift toward unifying academic and co-curricular support and its commitment to making opportunities easier to find and access.
