Café Arabia is advertised in Quinnipiac University’s weekly events email, but not many people know what goes on every Thursday night in SC207. Q30 Entertainment reporter Halle Sarfin went to investigate.
It turns out Café Arabia is an event organized by Muslim Chaplain Shamshad Sheikh. She and two fluent speakers gather every week to teach students Arabic. Some students come to review what they’ve learned in classes, while others are novices interested in learning something new. Ashley Alcott, a recent convert to Islam, decided to learn the Arabic so she could talk to her Middle Eastern friends in their native language.
Hasna Mazi, one of the teachers, says she hopes students will use the club as a way of learning Arabic as a second language.
For now, students work on learning basic conversational skills such as saying hello and introducing themselves.
