D23 dropped some major news at their 2024 expo this past August and I’m here to break it all down for you, just in case you missed it. Although there was a lot of different news from a variety of places, we’re going to focus on the announcements about movies, television shows and musicals. Here is everything you need to know about the information Disney shared two months ago.
If you don’t know what D23 is, it is “the Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa is a one-of-a-kind, multi-day fan experience showcasing the very best in creative storytelling and innovation from across the worlds of Disney. D23 in 2024 has been reimagined to be more expansive and more immersive than ever before, with three packed days of showcases with stars and storytellers, sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes moments, thrilling performances, shopping, surprises, and more,” according to their website. This year’s D23 event took place in Anaheim, California on Aug. 9,10 and 11.
- “Moana 2” hits theaters in just over a month on Nov. 27 and D23 attendees got an exclusive trailer and an appearance from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who voices Maui, and Auli’i Cravalho, who voices Moana. The official trailer is on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ YouTube.
- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced he is part of making a movie titled “Disney Monster Jam.” There is not much information about the project But, Johnson shared that he is enthusiastic about what it will become.
- A third “Avatar” movie will make its way to theaters in Dec. 2025. The title, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” had no sneak-peek videos shown. It stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana as they share an early look at concept art to get ready for the Dec. 19, 2025 debut.
- If you thought “Toy Story 4” was the last of the franchise, think again. “Toy Story 5” is hitting theaters in the summer of 2026. Many beloved classic characters will be making their return, and the director of many popular Pixar movies, Andrew Stanton, will be writing and directing the film.
- A new Pixar movie called “Hoppers” is in the works to be released in 2026. In this body-swap-style movie, actors Jon Hamm and Bobby Moynihan will play humans and beavers who accidentally switch places.
- A popular superhero family is coming back to the big screen. “Incredibles 3” is in the works and Brad Bird will be returning to the franchise to contribute his work. There are no further details about the movie.
- Pixar’s “Elio” has a release date of June 2025. Actress Zoe Saldana will be a part of the cast. Elio Solis, an 11-year-old child, unintentionally becomes Earth’s intergalactic liaison after making contact with aliens in this science fiction adventure movie. Elio will journey throughout the universe and discover his true purpose in life.
- Another Pixar sequel is in the works with “Zootopia 2” coming to theaters in Nov. 2025. A new character was introduced in Gary the Snake, who will be played by Ke Huy Quan. The movie will be released on Nov. 26, 2025.
- “Frozen 3” is also in the works, but not coming out any time soon. However, Disney did release some concept art regarding the movie at D23. Speaking to the D23 audience, director Jennifer Lee revealed the reasoning behind the team’s decision to go forward with a third and possibly a fourth, installment in its iconic animated franchise. The third movie is set to release in 2027.
- “Lilo & Stitch” announced that they’re making their way to the live-action world. A teaser has been released, depicting Stitch as the cute, puppy-like character he is rather than more of a scary alien. The teaser trailer is online and the movie will hit the big screen in summer 2025.
- Pixar’s first-ever original series is coming to Disney+ on Dec. 6, 2024. “Win or Lose” explores the experiences of eight distinct characters as they get ready for a championship softball game. This includes insecure children, their helicopter parents and even a lovesick umpire.
- “Frozen,” “Hercules” and “The Greatest Showman” are on their way to having stage adaptations. “Frozen,” although already a Broadway musical, has begun filming live and will make its way to Disney+ in 2025. “Hercules” and “The Greatest Showman” are both in the works of becoming musicals.
- Another live-action “Star Wars” series has a release date on Disney+ on Dec. 3, 2024, with a two-episode premiere. The “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” trailer is available to watch on Star Wars’ YouTube.
- Sticking with the “Star Wars” franchise, “Andor” is coming back for a second season. While there is no specific release date, lead actor Diego Luna took the stage at D23 and revealed behind-the-scenes footage, showing off some things fans can expect.
- The duo of The Mandalorian and Grogu from “The Mandalorian” appeared on screen at D23 with Grogu sporting a full suit of Mandalorian Beskar armor. Although this is a Disney+ series, the duo is returning in movie form on May 22, 2026, instead of a final season.
- A new original Marvel series, “Ironheart,” is coming to Disney+ at some point in 2025. This series will follow Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart and her journey at MIT while also keeping a new superpowered villain, played by Anthony Ramos, on her radar.
- “Daredevil: Born Again,” is another Marvel piece in the works. This is where Daredevil will have to deal with the Punisher and Kingpin once again. Season one comes to Disney+ in March 2025.
- The series “Agatha All Along” is out now on Disney+.
- “Percy Jacksons and the Olympians” released its first season in 2023 and just announced it’s releasing a season two which will depict a new storyline based on the second book in the series, “Sea of Monsters.” There is no release date yet.
- David Blaine showed up at D23 and announced a new show that he will be starring in, “David Blaine: Do Not Attempt.” This National Geographic show will portray Blaine traveling around the world to attempt crazy stunts. The show will premiere in 2025.
- Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are returning as Anna and Tess Coleman, respectively, in a “Freaky Friday” reunion. “Freakier Friday” is in the making and the actresses will experiment with powers beyond their control yet again. The movie’s release is in 2025.
- Disney is full steam ahead with developing live-action depictions of their animated movies. The “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” live-action trailer was one of the releases at the event. Rachel Zegler will play the role of Snow White. The release date for this movie is March 21, 2025.
- One of Disney’s oldest live-action movie franchises is getting another addition. “Tron: Ares” premieres in 2025. Ares is the center of this movie. Ares is a highly advanced program. The program dispatches a risky mission from the virtual world into the physical world.
- The final announcement of the evening revolved around the “The Lion King” franchise. Disney is creating a prequel live-action movie called “Mufasa: The Lion King.” It focuses on a young Mufasa and a young Scar. There is new music in this movie, with a release date of Dec. 20, 2024.
