The 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards Recap
November 16, 2020
It’s time to catch up on Hollywood’s latest digital award show: The E! People’s Choice Awards. The night was full of must-see moments, performances, and well-deserved wins!
Demi Lovato welcomed a virtual crowd, as the host of the evening, with a very special monologue. In it she spoke about her year and how it has “felt like 3 years.” Lovato even tapped into mentioning her engagement, as well as her “unengagement.” She said, “I am so excited to be here tonight because honestly this year has been the longest three years of my life. Don’t get me wrong, it started out amazing. I performed at the GRAMMYs and sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then, COVID hit, and everything shut down. So I did what everyone else did, I went into lockdown mode, and got engaged. I got into painting, photography, meditation, and tested the limits of postmates unlimited. Also, I didn’t know this could happen, but reached the end of Instagram four times. I binged seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got unengaged, then went looking for aliens in the desert.” Her monologue was full of humor and even featured a special Zoom drop in by Jimmy Fallon. It was everything fans needed in order to get amped up and excited to watch the show.
Some epic wins of the night included Tiffany Hadish, Jennifer Lopez, and Tyler Perry! Hadish took home the Movie Star of 2020 award and gave a heart-warming speech dedicated to all those that have especially been suffering with mental health during this troubling year. In her speech she said, “First of all I want to give out a shout out for anyone that was going through depression or has been depressed this year, especially those feeling like dang, I am sad and nothing is funny. And then you turn on something with Tiffany Hadish in it and then you’re like ‘Yes, I feel better!’ That was for you!”
Jennifer Lopez was honored with the People’s Icon of 2020 award. Prior to her acceptance speech, Lopez was gifted video messages on stage from Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger, who both spoke about how this award is so beyond well-deserved for the star. Lopez then proceeded to give her speech, starting out with talking about the mess that was 2020, but also how that mess taught her what truly matters in life. She said, “It showed us what mattered, what didn’t. And for me, reinforced what mattered most: People, all of us, together. Helping each other, loving each other, being kind to each other. And the importance of that connection, that human touch. I realized that’s what I strive for in everything I do. To reach people, to touch people. I believe that’s what we all want, those shared experiences to know that we’re not in this alone.” Lopez then continued to talk about her experience in this industry and how difficult sometimes have been, but how hard work and the thought of inspiring others always motivated her. She shared, “As a Latina and as a woman, we have to work twice as hard to get the opportunities, sometimes my big dreams and my ambitions, it made the people around me nervous. ‘You can’t be an actress. You’re an actress, what do you want to sing? You’re an artist, you won’t be taken seriously as a businesswoman.’ The more that they said I couldn’t, the more I knew that I had to. The true measure is inspiring girls of all ages and all colors, from all over the world, to know you can do whatever you want, as many things as you want and to be proud of who you are no matter where you come from. I want them to know your dreams are limited only by your imagination, determination and their willingness to never give up.”
Tyler Perry was also honored with the People’s Champion award. Perry delivered an inspirational and heartfelt speech, only continuing to prove why this award was so well-deserved and perfect for him. In the speech he started off with a story about his experience buying a home almost two decades ago. He mentioned that he needed to dig a well in his yard due to the overwhelming water bills he was receiving and having to pay for. Perry called up an engineer to start digging in order to find water and quickly saw that no matter how much he was digging, he just could not get it The engineer began to dig deeper and deeper trying to hit the water, and nothing seemed to be working. Perry decided that the next morning when the engineer came in he would tell him to quit and just end the whole process once and for all. However, when the engineer came in the following morning and turned on the machine they came to realize they were only 4 inches away from hitting the water. Perry shared, “Why am I talking about digging for water? In this world, we’re all digging wells, in our lives, digging wells in relationships, we put in time and effort and energy and sometimes it doesn’t give us what we need. Time and effort and energy into dreams and business and it doesn’t give us what we were after. But if you just keep digging… you may be four inches away from every gift and every blessing you ever wanted in your life. Had I given up when I was homeless, sleeping in my car, hungry, had I given up these people that you see on the screen right now wouldn’t be part of my dream.”
Justin Bieber took on the stage to perform his brand new hits ‘Lonely’ and ‘Holy.’ It was an epic performance and Bieber most definitely did not disappoint his fans! The iconic R&B pair, Chloe X Halle also delivered an iconic performance of their hit song ‘Ungodly Hour.’
