Thirty-ninth President of the United States Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 on Dec. 29, 2024. Carter was in office from 1977 to 1981. One of the highlights of his presidency was when the Three Mile Island accident occurred. Radiation leaked out of a Pennsylvania power plant. The leaking radiation was not to be harmful or dangerous. The incident takes its place as the U.S.’s most significant nuclear accident. Carter visited Pennsylvania near the site of the accident to guide the people through the hardship.
Former President Carter visited Quinnipiac University in 2007 to commemorate and honor the 50 anniversary of Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer for his stance against nuclear weapons. Carter won the first-ever Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award for sharing and advocating for restrictions on nuclear weapons. Carter was a nuclear power expert for the U.S.
The public funeral for Carter was held on Jan. 8 where citizens visited to pay their respects and send condolences to the family.
On Jan. 9, officials transported former President Carter to the Washington National Cathedral for a brief arrival ceremony followed by the National Funeral Service.
After the service, Carter was brought back to Georgia to be buried in his hometown per his request.
All around the country, people have done things to memorialize former President Carter including President Joe Biden declaring that Jan. 9 will be a national mourning day for the late president. All U.S. flags will fly at half-staff for the next 30 days. Governor Ned Lamont has also declared that Jan. 9 will be a day of remembering Carter and has asked residents of Connecticut to take part in a silent Memorial that will take place at 10 a.m. which also lines up with Carter’s funeral service in D.C.
Some of Carter’s most known achievements include his national energy policy which allowed conservation price control and new technology to thrive and his succession of pursuing the Camp David Accords and the Panama Canal treaties while in office.
Carter’s legacy will live on in many ways including his non-profit Carter Center which continues to give back to many communities and causes like preventing and resolving conflicts and enhancing the freedom and democracy of other countries along with improvement of health.
