This past weekend the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team skated in the Frozen Four for the second time in the last four years. In the semifinals, the Bobcats hung on for a close one goal win against Boston College. But then in the national championship game against North Dakota, they were blown out.
“They (North Dakota) jumped out on top of us 2-0 really quickly,” said sophomore Mike Giacomo. “I couldn’t see how we were even competing (against) like 12 NHL ready players.”
Led by Drake Caggiula and Brock Boeser, North Dakota never looked back from that early lead, winning 5-1.
“I was completely just shocked,” said junior Alec Turner. “I thought it was going to be a close game. I didn’t know if they were going to win or lose, but it was ugly. It got ugly quick.”
In preparation for the big game, Hamden Police stationed extra officers on campus. They were there to control rowdy students and curtail any destructive behavior.
“They (students) found an excuse to break things and they took advantage of it,” Turner said of student’s actions.
On Thursday night students congregated on Bobcat Way to celebrate the victory. Their celebration quickly became destructive as three students ripped down a tree and then proceeded to light it on fire.
“It was complete chaos,” Turner said.
Two students were arrested for destroying university property and are both charged with first degree criminal mischief. Quinnipiac has suspended them pending their student conduct meetings.
