At the top of every hour on a weekday morning, York Hill residents are typically found circling the Hill Top parking lot on the Mount Carmel campus in hopes of finding a parking spot not too far from the stairs.
This search can lead to “aggressive” and “sometimes reckless” driving according to junior, Amelia Toye who was in Hill Top at the time of an accident that left a vehicle to be rolled onto its side. Toye was one of the students who reported the accident to Public Safety and the Hamden Police and was the first on the scene to help the student that was trapped in the driver’s seat of the flipped Jeep.
“The airbags did go off, you could smell it and see them so she definitely was stuck. Because of the fumes, a girl opened the trunk [of the Jeep] in order to get her some fresh air to breathe because of the fumes, which was something that I would have never would have thought of,” shared Toye.
The student was removed from the driver’s seat within minutes of first responders arriving at the scene. The lot was closed for about an hour and students were redirected to other parking lots on campus until the accident and both cars were cleared from the scene. The student in the flipped vehicle was brought to Yale-New Haven hospital and reportedly suffered minor injuries.
