This week, Pi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta, Alpha Delta Pi, Zeta Beta Tau, and Beta Theta Pi teamed up to raise awareness and take action against cancer, specifically Leukemia and Lymphoma.
They kicked off the week on Monday night with an open mic style event. Several members of the Quinnipiac community spoke about their experiences with cancer and how it has affected them and their loved ones.
Attendees had the opportunity to make get well cards for children at the Smillow Cancer Center in the Yale-New Haven Hospital and create their own ribbons.
Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness week is taking place a little over a year after Pi Kappa Phi alumnus, Ben Preller passed away after battling Leukemia. Event organizer and Philanthropy Chairman for Pi Kappa Phi, John Khillah stated why the event wasn’t just about Preller.
“The reason we decided to bring this event to light, though remembering [Ben Preller] has weight to it,” Khillah said. “We wanted to group together as all that have been affected by any cancer and just fight together. We all came to the consensus to donate to LLS.”
Each attendee paid a $2 fee at the door, which will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The organizations will continue to table in the student center throughout the rest of the week to raise more proceeds and awareness about Leukemia and Lymphoma.
