At 70-years-old, Stephanie Paulmeno is on her way toward receiving her doctorate degree in nursing at Quinnipiac University.
Paulmeno has been a nurse for nearly 49 years. She is currently the President of the Connecticut Nursing Association and sits on more than 14 boards. Starting her nursing career back in 1969, Paulmeno has had the opportunity to sit in various roles within the nursing profession starting with traditional bedside care and moving up the ranks to several director positions. Now, she has her own public health consulting firm. Paulmeno even ran for public office during her career.
“How I rose to achieve some of the positions I achieved was an enigma to me,” stated Paulmeno.
Now that Paulmeno is achieving what she planned on being her final goal, she has started to come up with some new ones. She plans to write a book and to teach after receiving her doctorate degree.
“I regret to say that not one of my mentors was ever a nurse, so I made it my mission that I was gonna be that mentor to other people along the way.”
One lesson Paulmeno hopes to pass on to her future students is to “be a mentor.”
“Be a mentor. What you learn, you have to give back; whether it’s to individual people or to public service…” said Paulmeno.
