Throughout the many new experiences Quinnipiac freshmen take part in their first year on campus, selecting housing for sophomore year is one of the trickiest.
Fears of not landing the location you want or not being able to live with all of your friends are common, but Melissa Karipidis, associate director of residential life, said no matter what, things will work out.
“Wherever you land is your best place,” Karipidis said. “The problem isn’t, ‘What’s your number?’ the problem is what happens when what you want is no longer available?”
For freshmen students, the range of availability is big.
There are seven-person, apartment-style suites available in “The Hill” and “The Village.”
There are eight-person suites available in three buildings known as “The Suites.”
And there are six-person apartments available in “The Complex.”
Though Hill and Village are the most popular, Karipidis says the focus should not be on where you’re living, but whom you’re living with.
“If you’re with your friends, then you should have the best experience that you can, regardless of whatever the walls around you look like,” she said.
A change is coming to the housing selection process this year, according to Karipidis. Rather then all sophomore buildings be up for grabs throughout the three days of selection, there will be a staggered selection. This will provide students who don’t get their first selection the chance to regroup, possibly add or subtract members of their group if need be, and prepare for selecting a place to live the next day.
This all means the following:
– April 13: Housing selection begins, with Hill and Village available
- Once these rooms are filled, a freeze will take place, and an event will be held that night for all remaining freshmen to come together and regroup if they need to adjust the number of people they want to live with.
– April 14: Selection resumes, with the Suites available
- Once these rooms are filled, another freeze will take place, along with another regrouping event that night.
– April 15: Selection resumes, with the Complex available for all remaining students.
Though she cannot guarantee where everyone will end up living, there is one thing Karapidis is sure of. “It’ll be ok,” Karipidis said, “Everybody will get a place to live.”
