Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey topped Yale 6-2 on Friday night at High Point Solutions Arena in game 1 of the ECAC Quarterfinals series.
The third seeded Bobcats had five different goal scorers and got points from five different freshmen to defeat the sixth seeded Bulldogs.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the middle of the second period before the defending national champs fought back to cut the lead to two. Quinnipiac quickly responded by extending the lead back to three on Travis St. Denis’ second goal of the game.
Connor Clifton then scored a breakaway goal to make it 6-2 to seal the deal for the Bobcats. Clifton joined his brother Tim on the scoring sheet – who got the scoring started for Quinnipiac just over four minutes into the first period.
Michael Garteig made 17 saves for the Bobcats in the victory as Alex Lyon made 29 saves through two periods before he was pulled in favor of Patrick Spano in the third. Spano finished with five saves on seven shots for the Bulldogs.
The win is the fifth in the last seven games for Quinnipiac versus Yale. The Bobcats record against the Bulldogs since the beginning of the 2012-2013 season is 5-1-1 with the only loss coming in the national championship game.
Quinnipiac can close out the series and advance to Lake Placid next weekend with a victory on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Yale looks to extend the series and improve it’s chances at making the NCAA tournament with a victory. If necessary, game 3 would be played Sunday at 7 p.m.
