After a big weekend in Quinnipiac sports, Victoria Rutigliano runs down all the action for you.
Starting off with men’s hockey, the team hosted two ECAC foes this weekend in Dartmouth and Harvard. Friday night’s matchup with Dartmouth was a close one, with the teams skating to a 1-1 tie, sending the game to overtime. It only took under two minutes for Quinnipiac senior Soren Jonzzon to net the game winning goal. As quick as it took for the Bobcats to win Friday night’s game in overtime, it was even quicker for Harvard to jump out to a lead on Saturday night. The Crimson’s Kyle Criscuolo put the puck past Quinnipiac goaltender Michael Garteig 16 seconds into regulation. Travis St. Denis would tie it up before the end of the first period, but Harvard would go on to score three unanswered goals and would end up winning 5-2.
The women’s hockey team was on the road trying to continue their winning ways. They were at Dartmouth Friday night taking on the Big Green. The two teams skated to a 4-4 tie, ending the Bobcats three game winning streak. Quinnipiac held the 4-3 lead heading into the last five minutes of play, but Dartmouth’s Eleni Tebano tied the game at 4. Quinnipiac’s Erica Uden-Johansson scored two goals in the game. They traveled up to Harvard the next night and suffered their first loss of the season to the Crimson by a score of 2-1.
The basketball teams were also in action to begin conference play. The women’s team defeated Siena on Friday 78-65. They were led by senior Sam Guastella’s career night. Guastella scored 28 points on 10-15 (67%) shooting, going 6-9 (67%) from beyond the arc. In contrast with the women’s team’s 13 point victory, the men’s team lost to the Saints by 21 points at the Times Union Center in Albany, 88-67. Siena won the game on a total team effort as five different players scored in the double digits.
Both teams then took on Fairfield on Sunday. On the road, the women were just able to pull off the one point victory. The men’s team and Fairfield had a low scoring affair in Hamden with the Stags defeating the Bobcats 56-52 in overtime. The Bobcats were up by three when Fairfield’s Marcus Gilbert knocked down a three-pointer over two Bobcats defenders to tie the game with two seconds left.
The Rugby team took home third place at ACRA Tournament. After losing to Penn State in the semifinals, the team took down Indiana 55-32.
That’s all the action from this past weekend. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates on Quinnipiac athletics.
