The Quinnipiac baseball team has now dropped back-to-back games, falling to the Hartford Hawks 7-5 on Tuesday afternoon. The story of the game for the Bobcats was poor base running, stranding six runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Bobcats were down 4-2, Ben Gibson would be thrown out trying to steal second base and then Julius Saporito would be picked off at second base. Quinnipiac left six runners left on bases that were in scoring position.
Coach John Delaney noted how much the decisions along the base paths hurt, saying the team made a few “mental mistakes.”
Saporito got picked off the Bobcats were attempting a double steal trying to move Mike Palladino the runner on first base to second and Julius Saporito to third.
Delaney noted the risk when making along the base paths. “When you an aggressive team your going to have moments where it works and there’s going to be times when it doesn’t work.”
Starting pitcher Joseph Scaglione would pick up the loss and is now has a 2-5 record on the year. His final through seven innings pitched was nine hits, five runs, and three strikeouts. He also gave up a home run to the Hawks lead off batter Trey Stover. Ben Gibson and Matthew Batten both had strong days at the plate getting two hits and an RBI apiece.
Feshaman Julius Scaporito also hit his first career home run. There was also a surprise in the Bobcats lineup Tuesday as Robert Pescitelli was the designated hitter. Pescitelli, a junior, was a huge bat in the Bobcats lineup in his first two seasons. He has had one at a bat all season before Tuesday due to back surgery.
“Rob has been hurt so we have been rehabbing him,” Delaney said. “Now that he is back to full strength we are just trying to work him back in the lineup.”
