The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team topped the Yale Bulldogs 5-3 on Saturday night in game 2 of the ECAC quarterfinals to clinch the series 2-0 and advance to the semifinals next weekend in Lake Placid.
The Bobcats jumped on the board first when Sam Anas scored his 20th goal of the season just three minutes into the first period. Quinnipiac tallied another goal off of the stick of Travis St. Denis before Yale broke through on a John Hayden power play goal to cut the Bobcats lead back to one.
But Quinnipiac would regain the two-goal lead late in the first frame when Tommy Schutt poked home a loose puck that was sitting in the crease following a deflection off of Yale goaltender Alex Lyon.
The second period, however, was all Bulldogs as Yale scored twice to even the game at three. Mike Doherty and Ryan Obuchowski were credited with the tallies for the Bulldogs.
The momentum would swing one final time as Quinnipiac regained the lead on a Jordan Samuels-Thomas rebound goal early in the third period. The Bobcats would then add one more as Anas scored again to seal the deal for Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats will play Colgate next week in the semifinals, while the Bulldogs ECAC season comes to an end. Yale must also wait and see what happens around the rest of the country before it will know if it will have the chance to defend it’s NCAA championship.
