VIDEO STORY:
The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team hosted Brown on Friday night in game one of the three game series that makes up the ECAC Quarterfinals. Skating without its captain Chase Priskie due to suspension, Quinnipiac needed a different spark to light its fire. A goal from defenseman Karlis Cuskte appeared to make all the difference.
But the spark truly came in the form of goaltending.
Andrew Shortridge made save after save to keep the Bears off the board for 59 minutes. Yet games are 60 minutes.
With 21.5 seconds remaining in regulation and an extra attacker on, Brown netted the equalizer and forced overtime.
From there, the Bears rode their momentum into the extra time. Late in overtime, Jack Gessert scored on a rebound to lift his team to victory and take a 1-0 series lead.
Quinnipiac has its back against the wall. The Bobcats will need to win each of the next two games in order to move onto the conference championship weekend in Lake Placid, New York.
Game two is set from 7 p.m. on Saturday night in Hamden.
