Head coach Cassandra Turner and the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team had another dominating win Monday over the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 9-1.
Coming hot off of her 100th career win, Turner wanted to complete the sweep in a dominating fashion. The Bobcats attacked the Pioneers’ zone throughout the game and overwhelmed goalie Frankie Sanchez with 61 shots-on-goal.
The first goal came almost four and a half minutes into the game when Nina Steigauf set up Kenzie Hauswirth to find the back of the net for her first goal of the young season.
Twelve minutes later, the Bobcats struck again, this time by senior forward Renee Saltness, her second goal of the new campaign. Once the horn sounded to end the first period, Quinnipiac had a 2-0 lead.
The second period saw a rather quiet offensive performance for both sides. Sanchez had a great period stopping 23 of the shots put against her, however, Saltness’s shot almost ten minutes into the frame blew past her like a bullet and Quinnipiac took a commanding 3-0 lead going into the final period.
The final period saw an offensive outburst by the Bobcats as they continued to shoot the puck on goal. Sophomore Sadie Peart got the pounding started almost three minutes into the third with a laser that found the back of the net to make it 4-0 Bobcats.
Three minutes later, junior defenseman Courtney Vorster scored her first goal of the season. A few minutes later, junior forward Lexie Adzija shot the puck and it pinged off the post, but senior Taylor House was there to pick up the rebound and lay it in for the easy goal, giving the Bobcats a 6-0 lead.
At the halfway point of the third, the Pioneers finally found the back of the net with a two-on-one pass from Alexa Ocel to Paige McNeil to make it a 6-1 game.
It didn’t take long for Quinnipiac to answer as House finally found the back of the net with her first goal of the season. A 7-1 game quickly turned to an 8-1 game after Hauswirth scored her second goal of the game. 29 seconds after Hauswirth’s goal, Senior Brooke Bonsteel shot her first goal of the season to make it a 9-1 victory for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac is now 2-0 on the young season and has a month to prepare before they begin conference play against the 5th ranked Colgate Red Raiders in Hamilton.
Although the Bobcats won big, they will have to stay focused when January rolls around to begin playing in a very competitive conference.
“I know that our team knows what it takes to play conference games,” Turner said. “They are very excited about that.”
With this short season ready to hit conference play, the Bobcats have to be fully prepared for tough competition, especially in ECAC Hockey. Meanwhile, Saltness and House both had wonderful games.
When asked about how she increased in points scored from Sunday’s game to Monday’s, Saltness responded with, “Keeping the same focus despite the score of the first game.”
House scored her first goal of the season Monday and had four assists to match the goal.
“Getting the first one always feels good to get off your shoulders,” she said.
House and the rest of the Bobcats will get some rest before they take on Colgate on Jan. 9 in Hamilton, New York.
