Al Jazeera, a new network focused on real hard news, visited Quinnipiac University Saturday morning to give a Q & A with student media on campus.
Nicholas Monte, Madeline Finkel and Jason Driscoll, two of the three former Quinnipiac students, led the panel for Al Jazeera to explain their experience to undergraduates and faculty in attendance.
“I used to attend these panels when I was a student,” Finkel said. “I loved listening to other people’s stories.”
For part of the panel, the three explained how they’re known as the “New Kids in the News,” and how hard it is to develop their new name into a worldwide brand.
“We just tell the news,” Monte said. “We just want to tell the facts the way they are.”
“It was very inspiring because of their values in what’s newsworthy,” senior Katherine Rojas said.
One of the focal points of the lecture was how students should get involved as soon as they can to get the best experience before they graduate and find professional jobs.
“Someone went on a limb years ago to help me get into broadcast news,” Monte said. “I would’ve killed for these tips 8-10 years ago.”
Al Jazeera says they’re willing to hand out internships to students who show they’re capable of writing and producing at a professional level.
