The School of Communications at Quinnipiac University is making changes to the journalism program. The university has made the decision to combine the broadcast and print journalism majors and make them as one program. The reason for this change is because the current curriculum is outdated and it hasn’t prepared students well enough for a media convergent world according to the Quinnipiac School of Communications.
According to Assistant Professor of Journalism, Ben Bogardus, the new program will help students become ready for a multimedia world. “The jobs today you need to be able to do both. A television reporter is updating the website, also tweeting the story. A traditional print journalist is taking video in regard to the story.”
According to the School of Communications the curriculum will be less restrictive. This means students will be required to take on more general courses that focus more on the field of journalism as a whole. Students have the option to take elective courses that relate to their interest and career goals.
Some students at Quinnipiac University believe that the program will be beneficial in the long run because it will lead students down a path toward future success.
The new program is expected to start in the fall of 2014 and will only be offered to incoming freshmen.
