ESPN anchor John Buccigross stopped by the Buckman Theater early Wednesday afternoon. He mainly talked about how he got to where he is today, along with doing a Q & A with students in attendance.
“I think that John (Buccigross) had a lot of good things to say,” freshman Adam Cazaz said. “I liked how he talked about what goes behind the scenes at ESPN.”
While Buccigross is a known talent for ESPN, he started off small. A graduate from Heidelberg University, he started off working for small companies in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. At the age of 30, he was hired by ESPN, and currently anchors Sportscenter and does play-by-play for regional collegiate hockey games.
“I was so lucky to be that age,” Buccigross said. “When Walt Disney bought them (ESPN), I’ve just ridden the wave with them. A small little boat just trying to keep up.”
Buccigross has gained more popularity over the past two years with his new Twitter trend, the #bucciovertimechallenge. This challenge is for any overtime hockey game. You pick two players (one from each team), and if you pick the correct player to score the game-winner while Buccigross retweets you, you get a free #bucciovertimechallenge shirt. Buccigross is surprised the challenge has gotten so popular.
“I just love when it trends between something like ‘Snoop Dogg’s favorite food’ and ‘What’s Rihanna wearing tonight?'” Buccigross said. “To me that’s hysterical.”
Students found the Buccigross seminar to be enjoyable, as well as an educational experience.
“It was very interesting,” junior Michael Levy said. “It really gave us a lot of insight for college students like us who want to get to where John Buccigross is.”
Buccigross didn’t do any internships nor has an agent to negotiate his job contracts. In the seminar, he repeats multiple times how it’s more about how much you want the job that’ll help you get that job in the real world.
“If you just have some energy and a yearning to excel, then you’ll succeed,” Buccigross said.
