HAMDEN, Conn.—with the unofficial May weekend just a couple days away and the weather heating up, the Student Programing Board is trying to help Quinnipiac students make better decisions. In 2007, Quinnipiac stopped recognizing May weekend because it contradicted the university’s core values.
Even though the university killed the idea in 2007 the student body has kept the tradition alive. Quinnipiac students have created a culture of drinking and some feel it is expected of them to part take in it according to Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Seann Kalanger.
Students choosing to be actively involved in this culture occasionally find themselves in Kalanger’s office. According to Kalanger, the vast majority of cases coming across his desk involve underage drinking on the Mount Carmel campus.
It is safe to say alcohol, shot glasses, and loud music have become main stays here at Quinnipiac and many students agree college weekends and alcohol go hand in hand; however, according to Student Programing Board President, Robert Grant that does not have to be the case.
SPB hosts events on Friday and Saturday night from eight until ten in the Carl Hanson Student Center. The events have featured live comedians and musicians as well as viewings of popular movies.
These events allow students to socialize with one another and make new friends without drinking alcohol. Generally, the events do not yield a large turnout; however, Grant does not define a successful evening by a head count but, a smile count. It is believed if more students knew when and where these events are, then more students would come.
