Quinnipiac’s Student Programming Board recently announced that Capital Cities, an indie rock duo best known for their hit song “Safe and Sound,” will be headlining the 2014 Wake the Giant Concert.
Despite the big reveal, reactions from the student body seem to be lackluster, with some students scolding SPB.
“It’s just really frustrating,” senior Abby Uzamere said. “The fact that they put all these big names on [the survey], and then when it’s time for the concert it’s a little name…it doesn’t really make sense.”
Many students are focusing on SPB’s survey as the culprit for the selection of each artist. Students say they feel the selection committee ignores what they mark down on their surveys each year.
But according to Kristin Foley, the MainStage chair for SPB, the selection for each concert is based mainly on the students’ surveys.
“We kind of look at what the student body wants,” Foley said. “But it’s not a voting system, which some people seem to think it is. It’s just more of a way for us to see what genre people would like to see.”
Although this past fall’s “Fall Fest” brought about decent-size crowds, SPB’s last few concerts before that had noticeably low attendance. While Foley is optimistic that students will come to see Capital Cities, students are protesting it until they see a change.
