Voters will head to the polls tomorrow to cast their vote in the midterm elections.

They will be able to vote on who they want in both the United States House and Senate as well as positions in the state level.

In this election, Democratic candidate for the 17th district Senate, Jorge Cabrera, and Republican incumbent George Logan are in the tightest race for a state senate seat.

“It is the number one targeted State Senate seat in the state of Connecticut. It literally can decide who has majority in the State Senate,” said Cabrera. “I’ve spent the last 20 years fighting for working and middle-class people, whether it’s helping them get pensions, have health care, making sure they have a voice in their job…the skills and experiences I have gained in my job position me perfectly to be a strong advocate for my district.”

However, unlike previous years, Hamden residents may be more likely to vote in this election.

“I think a lot of people are very upset with what’s going on,” said Hamden resident Sydell Latsin.

“I think there is a level of interest and energy that is very different from previous cycles. I think a lot of that is driven by what is happening in Washington and some of the division,” Cabrera said. “Even most recently we’ve seen with the shooting in Pittsburgh. People are energized and want to make their voices be heard.”

Some will not head to the polls, but others like Hamden resident Trina Strickland feel that everyone should express their right to vote.

“I’m strongly voting because we have a right to,” said Strickland. “So when you have a right to you should do it.”

Quinnipiac University is also reaching out and encouraging students to vote. Emails have been sent to students giving instructions as to how to register to vote and where to go.

“I think that young people have a huge role to play and it can really play an outside role. It is very important they come out to vote because quite frankly the adults aren’t getting it,” said Cabrera. “So I think the more young people you can get to vote the better.”

The polls will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. and will be open until 8 p.m. and locations vary. If you are registered with your Mt. Carmel Campus address, your location to vote is at the Hamden Public library. If you are registered with your York Hill address, your location is the Westwood School at 350 W Todd Street.
