AJ Sumbry is out, Will Simonton is in.
A source has told Q30 Sports that Simonton, a 6-foot-10, 235 pound big man from the University of Illinois-Chicago is transferring to Quinnipiac. The Vienna, Va. product will be using his fifth year of eligibility and is eligible immediately for the Bobcats.
Things seemed to be going well for Simonton at UIC. After his freshman campaign where he was a reserve post, he played in all 34 games and averaged 13.1 minutes per game as a sophomore for the Flames. In his junior season, Simonton broke his hand and was sidelined for more than a third of the season. Heading into the 2014-15 campaign, he broke his foot and was out for the year, ultimately red-shirting.
Simonton’s stats aren’t eye catching, but he does add depth and experience to a Quinnipiac front court that consists of inexperience and youth. With AJ Sumbry leaving for Wagner, and Ousmane Drame and Justin Harris graduating, that leaves sophomores Chaise Daniels and Samuel Dingba, along with juniors Alain Chigha and Donovan Smith and incoming freshman Abdulai Bundu as the Bobcats front court.
Simonton averaged 1.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10.1 minutes per game during his stint with UIC.
