The road to Quinnipiac men’s basketball’s first ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship just got a lot harder.
According to a source close to the team, Bobcats big man Donovan Smith had surgery Wednesday on a broken foot, probably ending the senior’s career. The 6-foot-9, 245 pound forward broke his foot in the first half of Quinnipiac’s game against Siena on Monday night.
The source also said Smith’s recovery will take approximately six weeks, which from Wednesday is March 15. The MAAC Tournament is March 2-6 in Albany, N.Y.
Smith was a big piece to the puzzle for head coach Tom Moore, being the first big man off the bench and making the most of his minutes. The Chicago, IL product is averaging 7.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game in just 18 minutes a night. Smith also had a five game stretch in which he averaged 11.2 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.
With Smith sidelined, it now forces Tom Moore to give Chaise Daniels and Abdulai Bundu more minutes, and maybe even giving reserve Ja’Kwan Jones a shot.
When Smith went down Monday night, Moore featured a four-guard lineup in the second half, with Mikey Dixon, Peter Kiss, Reggie Oliver and Andrew Robinson, along with one forward.
