Just a day after taking down Yale in its first ECAC game of the year, Quinnipiac’s women’s ice hockey team dominated Brown University 8-0. Eight different players scored for the Bobcats in the win, improving their record to 2-0 in conference play.
The scoring started off in the first period when Alicia Barry netted her first goal of the season, and second of her career, giving the Bobcats the 1-0 lead. After scoring the first goal of her career yesterday against Yale, Kenzie Lancaster connected for another score, which gave Quinnipiac the 2-0 lead. The sophomore has been thankful for her teammates during her own offensive outbreak.
“It’s nice playing with Randi (Marcon) and Rocky (Raquel Pennoyer),” Lancaster said. “They’re always places I know they’re going to be. They work hard to get the puck back, so I think that helps a lot.”
Marcon scored with four seconds left in the first, giving the Bobcats the 3-0 lead heading the first intermission.
In the second period, Quinnipiac’s offense didn’t let up. Meghan Turner scored first, followed by scores from Melissa Samoskevich, Taryn Baumgardt, and Kenzie Prater. By the end of the second period, the Bobcats lead 7-0, and had a 22-6 shot on goal advantage.
As a senior leader, Turner admitted it can sometimes be difficult to keep focus when building such a big lead.
“It’s really hard,” Turner said. “After the first period we knew we were playing well. Every game we have certain things we strive for; things we want to fulfill. I think we set the standard even higher for ourselves today. Even after the second, we just needed to really focus on playing our game.”
The Bobcats put the finishing touch on the victory in the third period when T.T Cianfarano put one in the net to make the score 8-0.
Head coach Cassandra Turner was pleased with the fact that so many of her players got in on the scoring.
“That’s a step we want,” Turner said. “We’ve really talked to our other lines about chipping in and possessing the puck, being ready to shoot the puck. They are ready to chip in every other game. If we have that, I think we can be successful.”
Freshman Abbie Ives got her first regular season action and recorded five saves, including a highlight reel glove save where she had to go full split. Cass Turner was confident putting her out there.
“She’s a funny kid. For a lot of people, I’d be worried if they would lose focus, but not with her. On that penalty kill, point blank shot in the slot, and she was ready to make the save. That’s what we expect from her.”
The Bobcats will face off against ECAC rival Clarkson next Friday, Nov. 4 in Hamden at 6 p.m.
