The Quinnipiac women’s soccer team hit the pitch on Saturday tied with Canisius in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in points. The game started off slow in the first half, but then the Bobcats came alive in the second half and netted three goals in a four-minute stretch, and ultimately won 3-0.
The win also pushed the Bobcats past Canisius in the MAAC standings. The Bobcats are three points ahead of the Golden Griffins.
It was also senior day for the Bobcats as the five seniors on the team were honored for their time as student-athletes. The five seniors are Joanna Proctor, Kelly Caruso, Laura Nicholas, Jess Fontaine and Sarah Pandolfi. The seniors of Canisius were also honored before the game.
Quinnipiac led Canisius 16 shots to three. Freshman goalkeeper Olivia Myszewski made two saves on the day for the Bobcats and freshman Alana Rossi made four saves for the Golden Griffins.
The first half was slow to start off. Both teams had many throw-ins and turnovers. The damp field did show to be a small factor as players did lose their footing from time to time.
The first half time of possession, however, was controlled by Quinnipiac. The Bobcats had many chances but none found the back of the net.
Coming out for the second half, it was a different team it seemed like for the Bobcats.
“We put them away, we opened them up a little bit,” head coach Dave Clarke said. “In the second half the chances started to fall.”
And did the chances fall. Opening up the scoring for the Bobcats was sophomore Alex Pelletier assisted by Fontaine.
Then about 30 seconds go by and the Bobcats found the back of the net once again. This time, Fontaine assisted sophomore Nadya Gill to go up 2-0 in the 55th minute.
But wait, that’s not all. The Bobcats scored about two minutes later to up the score up to 3-0. Sophomore Madison Borowiec netted the third and final goal for Quinnipiac. The goal was assisted by Pelletier.
Fontaine gathered the two assists to start the Bobcat scoring.
“It was amazing, our team is really starting to click this year so it was just a good overall team effort,” Fontaine said.
In total 22 players saw playing time today, including four of the five seniors on the squad.
“There are still things we will get better at like on the ball, we will get better defending, we will get better attacking,” Clarke said. “There is a lot more to come from this group.”
The Bobcats will be back in action of Wedsenday Oct. 12. The team will have another MAAC opponent to face as Quinnipiac clashes with Iona. The game is home on the QU Soccer Field.
