The new Quinnipiac Soccer Turf Complex saw its first regular season game action on Sunday, Aug. 27 in front of filled stands. Quinnipiac’s women’s soccer team defeated Army West Point 2-0 in its home opener.
With the win, the Bobcats extended their home winning streak that began in the 2016 season to 10 games.
Junior midfielder Madison Borowiec was the first Bobcat to net a goal at the new complex. She finished a ball from the top of the goal box to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the first half.
“It honestly feels great,” Borowiec said. “I think it’s kind of unreal that we have this stadium now. But, being on the grass or being on the turf doesn’t really matter. We’re going to try and bring our best energy no matter where we play.”
While it was a significant moment for the Bobcats, head coach Dave Clarke was just glad to see his team generate offense.
“For me, it’s just like another game,” Clarke said. “I’m more focused on the quality of the goal and the way we produced it. It’s nice that (Borowiec’s) name will go down in the history books as the first player to score a goal here, she’ll take it.”
Al Pelletier followed suit in the 13th minute, tapping in a shot from the far corner to extend Quinnipiac’s lead to 2-0.
The new stadium, which has a capacity of 1,500, held 1,027 fans on Sunday afternoon. Below are a few pictures from the first outing on the turf:
Quinnipiac returns to action Wednesday, Aug. 30 to face Bryant University at 3 p.m. in Hamden.
