Last Saturday, Quinnipiac Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Don Sawyer, sent out an email announcing Quinnipiac’s solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian discrimination has dramatically increased during recent months.

Members of the Asian Student Alliance Club like President Rachel Reyes and Vice President Joshua Gorero, express their appreciation and slight frustration with the email.

We’re happy it’s getting acknowledged but we feel as though it should’ve been acknowledged maybe a little earlier,” said Reyes.

Students believe that much more action needs to be taken in the future in order for change to occur.

“Having these conversations, making people more aware, and breaking those inherently like discriminatory ideas about us would help make campus a bit more inclusive and welcoming to us,” said Gorero.

Promoting inclusivity, equality, and anti-racism is a major goal of Quinnipiac’s 10 point plan of action. ASA Club members suggest taking more direct action toward solving this problem.

“I just hope that they also find a way to address it in another email for us,” said Gorero.

The Asian Student Alliance club and numerous other students at Quinnipiac will continue to push for increased awareness towards the violence that Asians have been facing.
