The owner of a Quinnipiac and Hamden hotspot, Ray and Mike’s Dairy and Deli, was sentenced to prison today for tax evasion.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 53-year-old Raymond George failed to deposit all cash receipts of the business into his bank account and used some of the cash to fill the ATM located inside of the deli. George also did not report the cash as income or did not pay $220,000 in taxes in 2012 and 2013.

George paid personal expenses using the Ray and Mike’s business account with a deposit of three large checks of approximately $300,000 and a $25,8000 check from the Ray and Mike’s lottery account. He did not report any of this as income.

Customers have mixed opinions on whether or not this will be a factor if they continue to provide the deli with business.

George pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion on May 17, 2019 and has already paid the IRS $480,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties. He was released on a $100,000 bond, but he is required to be in prison on March 17, 2020.

George will now have to decide what he would like the future of Ray and Mike’s to be while he is gone.
