Quinnipiac picked up their second win of the second on Sunday afternoon, sticking it out against New Hampshire, 64-58.

First-year guard Tymu Chenery got his first career start and he didn’t disappoint. Chenery controlled the game, finishing with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

“He plays with fearlessness, a confidence even with some of the mistakes he makes…he gets over it quickly,” said Head Coach Baker Dunleavy.

Sophomore Brenden McGuire stuffed the stat sheet Sunday afternoon by leading the team with 17 points. McGuire also grabbed 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Dunleavy after the game said, “Improvement and confidence comes from hard work. And [McGuire] certainly works at the highest level…he’s developing I think a high potential as a defender and that’s where we’re really on him the most.”

Jacob Rigoni quietly rallied together a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Bobcats won this game despite turning the ball over a season-high 20 times, 13 times in the first half, along with 20 personal fouls which are the second-highest of the young season (Fairleigh Dickinson, 24 Personal fouls).

Quinnipiac now turns the page to conference play beginning Friday night and Saturday night against the Rick Pitino- led Iona Gaels.

Pitino captured his first win in college basketball since 2017 on Saturday giving Iona a 1-1 recond toat this point. The Gaels were picked by the MAAC coaches to finish second in the conference this season.

“I grew up watching this game and I’ve been watching his teams for a long time and I’ve been studying him as a coach,” Dunleavy said. “He’s a guy for his whole career, way ahead of the curve in terms of player evaluation and player development and also playing style…he’s been an innovator in our game and I love the idea of it until that ball is tipped and then you go to go and beat him.”

With the unique schedule in the MAAC for the 2020-21 season, Quinnipiac and Iona will play back-to-back nights in Hamden. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm on both Friday and Saturday night.
