The first teaser trailer for “Dune: Part 3” came out on March 17,, on YouTube. The film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, will serve as the conclusion to the Dune trilogy, and will be coming to theatres on December 17, 2026. The trilogy started in 2021 with “Dune: Part 1”, and features an all-star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and many more.
The trailer looks highly stylized, intense, and intricate. It introduced Robert Pattinson, who will play Scytale, the new lead antagonist in the film. Scytale can shape shift to mimic the identities of other characters, and poses a unique threat to the protagonists.
Villeneuve says the film will be different from the first two, “ more action-packed, more tense, and more muscular,” according to The Motion Picture Association.
The trilogy is based on the Dune novel series written by Frank Herbert, specifically, “Dune” (1965) and “Dune Messiah” (1969). It’s set in the far future, where noble houses reign supreme over various planets in an interstellar society. The main character, Paul Atreides, has to avenge his family, all while adapting to a completely new and hostile world.
The first two films are highly praised for their slow pacing, complex world-building and storytelling, as well as stunning cinematography and visual effects. This isn’t the first time the novel has been adapted for the screen, however. The first adaptation came out in 1984, directed by David Lynch, simply called “Dune”, and was not well received by audiences.
The film was clunky, quickly paced, and ugly-looking. Additionally, technology at the time was not suitable for a film as complex as the novel. It requires thousands of complicated VFX shots, and while some of them were accomplished in 1984, they didn’t look very good, especially compared to the 2021 film.\
Besides having access to modern VFX technology, the new trilogy is spread out, instead of being crammed into a single film, allowing for much greater depth and character development. The trailer shocked some fans by bringing back a character who originally died in the first film. It also showcases a new, more gritty look for the protagonists. Paul has a shaved head, probably to symbolize his adaptation to Arrakis.
I am looking forward to the conclusion of the trilogy, and I am curious what will happen between Paul and Chani, played by Zendaya. At the end of the second film, Paul becomes more of an anti-hero character, which makes me wonder if he will redeem himself in the third movie or be consumed by power.
