“Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 started last week, and with three episodes down, it is already in full swing. From Wilson Fisk’s Safer Streets initiative and Anti-Vigilante Task Force cracking down on New York, to Daredevil taking them down, there is a lot of action to be had.
Be warned, this article will feature spoilers for the first three episodes of Daredevil Born Again Season 2.
Looking back at season one, we saw Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, ascend to the role of New York City Mayor while Matt Murdock, played by Charlie Cox, returned to the role of Daredevil after the murder of his friend and business associate, Foggy Nelson.
The first episode of Season 2 opens up on the ship, the Northern Star, in the East River. Daredevil, in his new black suit, infiltrates the ship and learns that Fisk is trying to smuggle a bunch of weapons into his port at Red Hook. The captain and the first mate sank the ship as they were instructed to do if Daredevil intervened. Before he escapes, Daredevil places a watch inside one of the boxes so he can find it later on.
We find out that Matt and Karen are back together again after they broke up in season two of the original Netflix show. They are living above Josie’s bar, hiding out from Fisk’s task force and working underground in what people have called the resistance.
The sinking of the Northern Star provokes action from the Attorney General, who wants to overlook more of what Fisk is doing and the powers he has given himself to “keep the city safe.” He is stopped by a man named Mr. Charles, played by Matthew Lillard, who seems to have connections to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the director of the CIA. He helps Fisk clean up the Northern Star and recover the sunken weapons.
Matt asks for help to look for the captain and first mate of the Northern Star from his detective friend, Cherry. While he starts to look for information on them in his apartment at the end of the episode, he is visited by the Task Force. Luckily, Daredevil is able to come and help, but as Cherry starts to have a heart attack, he loses focus and is overpowered by the enemies. Gunshots ring out of nowhere, killing the force, leaving a knife saying “You’re Welcome” and the Bullseye logo.
Not as much happens in Episode 2, but it focuses primarily on the Anti-Vigilante Task Force’s brutality toward the people of New York. We see them take a store owner into custody after he tried to stop kids from robbing his store. They also take Soledad Ayala, the wife of Hector Ayala, aka the White Tiger, from Born Again Season 1, and aunt to Angela Del Toro. It ends with the task force surrounding and infiltrating Matt and Karen’s hideout in Josie’s Bar. Matt takes them down as Daredevil while Karen is able to escape, capturing a task force member, too. They take refuge in the Punisher’s hideout from season one.
Episode 3 starts with Karen and Daredevil interrogating the task force member whom she captured. They learn that he wants to be a part of the resistance and give Daredevil a keycard that he can use to free the people the task force has imprisoned.
The episode centers around the Vigilante Trials and Jack Duquesne, aka the Swordsman. McDuffie, Matt Murdock’s business partner, argues that Duquesne is innocent and that the prosecution has no real evidence that he is a vigilante. Despite this, he is found guilty.
The action kicks in when Daredevil infiltrates Red Hook, the place where Fisk’s weapons and the people imprisoned by the task force are taken. He doesn’t realize that this is where the people were, so he initially was just there for the weapons, but decides to free the prisoners instead, starting a great action sequence.
He is able to free all the prisoners with the help of Karen when they escape. As they drive away, Fisk orders the remnants of the Northern Star to be exploded along with the recovery crew that was still on board.
So far, this season has been pretty great, and I definitely think it’s a step up from the previous season. The action is chaotic and dynamic, with Daredevil’s usual shenanigans and screams thrown in. And his new suit is amazing, with the Daredevil logo finally on it. The show also looks much better so far, with a lot of the lighting looking a lot closer to that of the Netflix show. Matt Murdock also looks much closer to what he looked like in the Netflix show, helping it feel more like a continuation.
I was surprised to see that Matt and Karen were back together again, but it did seem like parts of season one were building that back up. Some of the side characters feel a lot more fleshed out and like they are their own people. I personally can’t wait to see what they do with the psychiatrist Heather Glenn, as she is facing trauma from getting kidnapped by a villain from last season, Muse.
There is still a lot to look forward to this season as Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, is set to return and help Daredevil take down Fisk. Critics who have already watched the season even say that everything after the third episode is awesome and features non-stop action. Vincent D’Onofrio, in an interview with IMDB, said, “I think we may have topped that in the second season” in reference to the “I beat you” scene from Daredevil Season 3. For people who know that scene, it is definitely a tough one to beat, so I can’t wait to see what he is talking about. Let me know your thoughts on the show so far down below, or message me @zachfornalmedia on Instagram. I’m excited to see all the action that the rest of the season holds, so tune in with me to watch the rest of Daredevil Born Again Season 2 on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Disney+.
