J.D. and Terk are back and better than ever. This past Wednesday, the iconic doctor duo returned to our screens to show that their bromance is stronger than ever before at Sacred Heart Hospital.
I will be discussing the storyline of the episode. So, if you don’t want any spoilers, make sure to watch before you read.
Episode one, titled “My Return,” opens with J.D. responding to an emergency room trauma. J.D. saves the patient and gets celebrated for doing so. Oh, actually, yeah. Turns out that was just his imagination, and he is a concierge doctor doing home visits.
But when a patient of his had a medical emergency and collapsed, he found himself right back in the Sacred Heart Hospital emergency room. Terk, having no clue that J.D. was in the building, stopped mid-surgery, had a sense that he was there, and went running to find his friend. They had an “eagle” moment and realized that they aren’t as young as they used to be, and it might be time to retire the eagle.
J.D. has a nostalgic moment and a flashback before bumping into Elliot. It turns out their marriage didn’t make it. They have a small fight and end up in the closet together to fight in private. Turns out J.D. and Elliot’s relationship isn’t what it used to be.
Dr. Cox is struggling to teach the new interns and his “methods” and language can’t be used anymore, and honestly, the new interns seem to be quite the handful. While J.D. is checking on his patient who was admitted, Cox drops off five of them because he needs a break. J.D. taught them how to do a simple procedure and realized that he missed teaching new doctors.
J.D. and Terk have a heart-to-heart moment where we learn that Terk doesn’t enjoy working at Sacred Heart as much as he used to with J.D., and he is burnt out. Terk gets upset and decides to cancel their plans and J.D. gets annoyed when he finds out that the patient he wants discharged got asked to stay another day.
The next day, J.D. finds out that Terk ended up going out with someone else, does his best angry walk, and goes to question Terk, and finds out that Terk just really didn’t want a therapy session and storms away angrily.
Elliot struggles with having J.D. around after the divorce. He asks Dr. Cox why he had to keep J.D.’s patient another day, and finds out that Carla told him that she decided to end her and J.D.’s marriage. Dr. Cox says, “It has always been hardest on the one who ends it,” and Elliot realizes maybe she has been a little harsh on J.D.
Dr. Cox has a somewhat valid crashout after an intern fails to do something simple and storms out while J.D. was trying to talk to him. J.D. ends up guiding the intern through how to do the procedure, an intern panics when blood squirts on him and has to step away. She keeps going, and she successfully completes the procedure.
We found out that Dr. Cox kept J.D.’s patient there because he wanted to keep J.D. there, claims J.D. “needed a reminder at how good you are at what you do,” and it was all a ploy to ask J.D. to come back to work at Sacred Heart.
J.D. gets Terk out of his slump when he learns how much an intern looks up to him and gets her to help perform surgery. Then, when going to leave the hospital, unsure if he should return or not, he sees a lady being wheeled into the hospital while CPR is performed.
Turns out that it was the lady that the intern refused to help earlier, and J.D. pushes the others to support him and comfort him as he realizes how he was wrong and that it will be ok and that it is a place for him to learn and grow from. From that moment, he knew that he wanted to come back and teach these interns.
Oh, and Dr. Cox threw a spin on everything. It turns out that J.D. won’t just be working there; he will be taking over for Dr. Cox as the new Chief of Medicine. Dr. Cox doesn’t want J.D. to replace him; he wants J.D. to do the job better than he could with the new generation, and J.D. is determined to do just that, but not on his own. His best friend, Terk, will be there with him.
Episode two is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, and new episodes air Wednesdays at 8 pm on ABC.
Overall, after watching this episode, I give it a 10/10. I love the storyline, and can’t wait to watch J.D. and Trek’s bromance unfold even more in the reboot as I continue to watch. The show feels like we picked up right where we left off, just 16 years later.
