Quinnipiac draws 12-seed, Oklahoma in NCAA Tournament

The women’s basketball NCAA Tournament Selection Show aired live on ESPN Monday night, and the Quinnipiac women’s basketball team learned where it would go dancing.

The Bobcats received a 12-seed from the committee, and are paired up with 5-seeded Oklahoma in the Oklahoma City region. The Bobcats and Sooners will square off in Stanford, California, with the Stanford Cardinals playing host in the sub-region. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21 on ESPN2.

It has been a historic season for Tricia Fabbri’s Bobcats , who enter the NCAA Tournament with a 31-3 record and an unblemished 23-0 record against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents.

On the other side, Oklahoma has had an impressive 2014-15 campaign. The Sooners head into the dance at 20-11, with a 13-5 Big 12 record and a second place finish in the Big 12 standings. In the conference tournament, Texas knocked off the Sooners in the semifinals.

The Sooners have two wins this season against Top-5 teams in the country. Back on Jan. 14, Oklahoma knocked off then-No. 4 Texas, and on Feb. 25 the Sooners shocked then-No. 3 and current-No. 5 Baylor. Over the course of the season, Oklahoma has played six games against nationally ranked opponents, posting a 2-4 record.

Oklahoma is a deep team, with four players averaging between nine and 14 points per game. Leading the Sooners in scoring this season is sophomore Peyton Little, averaging 13.2 points per game, while shooting at a 42 percent clip.

The true challenge for Quinnipiac lies inside. Six-foot-three, 201 lb. Kaylon Williams is going to cause havoc in the paint. The redshirt junior is averaging 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Williams is also shooting 59 percent from the field and has corralled 103 offensive rebounds this season.

It’s going to be a tough game for Quinnipiac, but it’s called March Madness for a reason. Enjoy it.
