The first trailer for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” was released on Nov. 12, 2025, introducing key plot points and characters. The film, produced by Illumination and Nintendo, is slated to release on April 3, 2026. The film is a sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which came out in 2023 and grossed nearly $1.4 billion worldwide, instantly becoming a global phenomenon.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is based on the critically acclaimed 2007 “Super Mario Galaxy” and 2010 “Super Mario Galaxy 2” games. It’s clear why they chose the Galaxy games as the basis of the next film, as they hold so much content. Additionally, many fans (myself included) hold the two games as the best in the entire Mario franchise.
The first trailer for the new film introduces Rosalina, played by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr., played by Benny Safdie. Chris Pratt will be welcomed back as the voice of Mario for the second film, as well as Ann Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
The trailer opens where we left off following the first film: Bowser is shrunken down to prevent his evil schemes, and all is well in the Mushroom Kingdom… Until Bowser Jr. reveals himself and attempts to save his dad. It isn’t clear where Rosalina comes in yet; however, in the games, she plays a crucial role in helping Mario defeat Bowser and rescue Princess Peach. It seems that the story is different from the first two games, but it stays true to the overall theme.
The trailer combined aspects of multiple 3D Mario games. While Bowser Jr. does appear in the Galaxy games, the paintbrush that he wields in the trailer is from the 2002 game “Super Mario Sunshine”. The trailer also features characters and environments from the 2017 game “Super Mario Odyssey”. I am curious to see if the film features aspects from the other major 3D Mario games, Super Mario 64 (1996) and Super Mario 3D World (2013).
Fans have also pointed out that the trailer lacks a certain green dinosaur friend: Yoshi.
Yoshi does not appear in the first “Super Mario Galaxy” game, but does appear in the second, so it might make sense to reveal him in the second trailer. It is confirmed that Yoshi will be in the film, as a Pillsbury cookie box was accidentally leaked by supermarket chain Tops Markets just days before the first trailer was released. It’s just a matter of when he will be officially revealed.
“Super Mario” is the biggest gaming franchise of ALL TIME: with over 200 games earning billions and billions of dollars since 1981. Nintendo first announced the production of the second Mario movie in 2024, but they also expressed interest in making other films as well due to the major commercial success. Before the success, Nintendo was skeptical about entering the film industry after the commercial failure of the 1993 “Super Mario Bros.” film, which was entirely live action. It seems that they aren’t entirely done with live action, however, as in late 2023, they announced the production of a live-action “The Legend of Zelda” movie.
It is currently unknown when the next trailer will come out for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”, but I absolutely cannot wait. I’m hoping that Yoshi is revealed, as well as more characters and planets from the Galaxy games.
