Netflix’s top show, Stranger Things, is finally returning for its 5th and final season starting this week on Nov. 26th. If you don’t know what it is, Stranger Things primarily follows a group of kids as they work to uncover and subsequently battle supernatural forces in their town.
Going into the final season, there are still many questions that the audience is looking to be answered. The show’s creators have stated that everything will be revealed and nothing will be left unanswered. I have many of my own predictions and theories, so here are my top three:
Be warned, there will be spoilers for previous seasons
- Will was directly taken by Vecna
In the show’s first episode, Will was followed, stalked, and taken by what we are to believe was the Demogorgon. The Duffer Brothers have confirmed that that was what drove Will off the road, but I don’t think it chased him, as it would have been too easy for it to catch up. Will was also not bleeding, giving the Demogorgon no reason to chase him.
When Will is hiding in his house, the front door is opened from the outside, and Ross Duffer stated in an interview with Digital Spy, “I will say the lock that gets opened telepathically, the Demogorgons aren’t telepathic.” The only known characters in the universe that have those powers are Vecna and Eleven.
I believe that it was Vecna who needed Will to run to his shed so he could take him. I have seen some theories online that it was instead Eleven, trying to draw Vecna to take Will instead of her after she escaped from Hawkins Lab. Eleven also knows who Will is in a later episode before she meets him, and this could be the reason why.
- Why the Upside Down is frozen in 1983
In Season 4, it is revealed through Nancy’s diary that the Hawkins in the Upside Down is frozen in time on November 6th, 1983. This is the same day that Will was taken to the Upside Down. One theory is that Will somehow created it since he wanted to be home so badly.
Another theory is that Eleven created it when she first made contact with the Demogorgon in the Void. This contact created a snapshot of Hawkins that’s infected by elements of Dimension X, where the Demogorgon and the other monsters are from. While it isn’t explicitly stated in the show when this was, it’s plausible that it was the same day as Will’s disappearance, and the reason she escaped and ran away.
- Character Deaths
With Season 5 being the last season, we will certainly be seeing major character deaths, so people wonder who these deaths will be. First of all, I think Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Max, Nancy, Jonathan, Joyce, & Hopper will all survive. They all feel too crucial to the group and feature no direct connection with Vecna and the Upside Down, so in my mind, they are off the table.
Out of the main cast, I think Steve, played by Joe Keery, is a bit of a wild card. Everyone loves Steve and wants him to survive. If they chose to kill him off, it would be an emotional gut punch to the audience and characters, showing that nothing is off the table.
On the chopping block, I see both Eleven and Will. Will has experienced so much trauma over the show, and there is still so much we need to find out about his connection with the Upside Down and Vecna. Now Eleven has the highest possibility. She is likely going to have a final battle against Vecna with some sacrifice play. This would be a huge blow to the cast, but close the story as it really all started with her.
I can’t wait to start watching Stranger Things 5 later this week. From all the trailers and teasers, it really looks like this season is going to be huge and feature some great action. Catch Volume 1, the first 4 episodes, on Netflix at 8 pm ET, on Nov. 26th. Watch Volume 2, episodes 5-7, when it releases on Dec. 25th with the finale on Dec. 31st.
